USO Dance

This past Saturday we went to the local Historical Society USO Dance. I know USA history is not near as rich as many countries, but we do have the local Dill Tavern that claims that George Washington slept there and Pickett stayed there while heading  to Gettysburg. We always think it is funny when the Chinese Tour bus comes through town and the tourists are avidly snapping pictures of the McDonald's and UniMart and completely ignoring the 200 year old Tavern. I guess by Chinese standards, 200 years

is not that impressive.

Anyway...

I donned my fabulous WWII duds and headed to the dance.

I found this great frock at the Goodwill for $5.00. I can't believe my good fortune, plus, it actually fit!  Usually I can't fit in the vintage dresses becuase of my odd shape. I know this one was waiting for me to take it home. The white gloves are mine from when we actually wore gloves, and the purse from the $5.00 bin at Miss Ruth's Time Bomb.

This hat was a gift to myself at the WWII Weekend Air Show in Reading, Pa.

The band is just local people and students from Dillsburg.



I thought you might like to see a picture of my home. It is a farm house that's been around for about 100 years. Everyone else in Dillsburg wants boring cookie cutter brand new homes with absolutely no character whatever. I prefer my farm house.

S.I.T.S. (Stuck In The Sixties)

This is one of my favorite frocks. It is from a reproduction line that the Time Bomb carried. I was able to get

this one on sale.

Admittedly, I should have has some of Helga's "safety pants". If I accidently mooned anyone today, they didn't complain.

Scones and Salsa

It's Sunday morning here and I was up early enough to make a batch of blueberry scones. K and I split 5 lbs. of blueberries earlier and I froze them to use as needed. If you freeze them laid out on a cookie sheet and then put them in a freezer bag, they stay individual to measure out for recipes.

 

Warm scones with lemon marmalade, I got when we were in Missouri in May.

The humidity lately is stifling. No use curling my hair in this weather, it will just go straight right away.

My dress and necklace was bought when one of the Fashion Bug stores was going out of business. I snagged the dress for only $12. The shawl was given to me by Lee (who gave me permission to share her recipe for cucumber soup).

After a quick change, it was salsa time!

A lot of chopping, but this salsa is well worth it. Plastic gloves a must for chopping jalapeno peppers. I rough chopped the peppers, onions and garlic then hubby finished them in the food processor.

Hubby made baked nacho chips from cut up tortilla's brushed with oil and sprinkled with taco seasoning.



We couldn't wait for it to cool. Here's the recipe:

Wonderful Salsa with Peaches

6 cups tomatoes, peeled, chopped and drained

2-1/2 C. Onions, chopped

1-1/2 C. Green Peppers, chopped

1 C. Jalapeno Peppers, chopped

1 C. Cubanelle Peppers, chopped

6 Garlic cloves, minced

2 t. Cumin

2 t. Black Pepper

1/8 C. Canning Salt

1/3 C. Vinegar

1-15 Oz. Tomato Sauce

1-12 Oz. Tomato Paste

4 C. Peaches, chopped.

Mix all together and bring to a slow boil for 10 minutes. Seal in sterilized jars and process in a hot water bath for 10 minutes.

Fried Green Tomatoes

K and I took a trip to the Co-Op farm today to pick up some tomatoes and veggies. After passing the farm three times, we finally found it. It was worth the trip. I'm planning to make peach salsa with my haul. I'll share the recipe with you later. Elaine (the farmer) picked the peppers while I waited.

I forgot my camera during the trip, but here is the result of the trip.

I made some fried Green tomatoes for dinner. You have to try these at least once in your life.

These are a variety of meaty green tomato. You just slice them, dip in egg...then flour...then egg again...then bread crumbs. Fry in a cast iron skillet and sprinkle with salt. I know, I know, fried food...but these are worth it!

Honorable son # 2 made mac and cheese for a picnic and was kind enough to leave us a small casserole of it.

So we did.

I love the way the roses are combined with the leopard print and of course the metallic glitter.

The shoes were from Gabriele Brothers. A great close out store where you can find the greatest stuff cheap!

The heels are sort of half round shape. I lost the heel tips but still wear them because they are so comfortable.

Miss Ruth's Time Bomb

I don't have any new pictures of late, so I thought I'd share a little bit about one of my favorite vintage shops. I found Miss Ruth's when I went to Carlisle, PA for swing dancing one week. Luckily, we arrived early and decided to walk around town and check things out. I looked in the window of this wonderful little shop and knew immediately that I would be returning.

Return I did. I found out every Tuesday was Stitch and Bitch night and found a group of wonderful girls, all with a style of their own.

Here is a picture of our "Stitch and Bitch" group modeling for Miss Ruth's to raise money for the local YWCA.

Miss Ruth's handle's vintage items as well as a vendor for Mode Merr Clothing.

This past winter we packed up the store for major renovations. Here are some pictures of our packing up party.
